Edward Degas Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas
Died: 27 September 1917; Paris, France
Edgar Degas was a prominent French artist, famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings in the last half of the 19th century. Born to a wealthy family, the eldest of five children of Célestine Musson De Gas and Augustin De Gas, a banker.
Although he indeed worked with impressionist artists, such as Edouard Manet and Mary Cassatt , he rejected the label “Impressionist.” Technically, Degas differs from the Impressionists in that he continually belittled their practice of painting en plein air. He was often as anti-impressionist as the critics who reviewed the shows. He detested the scandals brought about by their Exhibitions, and he mocked them for painting outdoors. His personal life was outwardly uneventful, due to his belief that an artist should live private lives of solitude. He thus lived a life of solitude, never married, opposed social change and technological innovations, always painted indoors, and ceased painting by 1912, at which time he was nearly blind. He died wandering the streets of Paris in 1917.
"no art was ever less spontaneous than mine. What I do is the result of reflection and of the study of the great masters; of inspiration, spontaneity, temperament, I know nothing." Edgar Degas
